Their Words:

"[It] speaks of big changes, human nature and emotions . . . hear what Matthew has to say.”

“There’s beauty and an honesty here that’s simply human”

My Words:

“The Axe and the Evergreen” is not a concept album, in the strictest sense of the definition, however, there are some undeniable themes that run through the track list. If not anything else, this record is a journey.

These songs were composed over the course of one year, written from winter to winter. It was a year of struggle, and change--a lot of this struggle, and change happening within myself. This seems to have made the concepts obscure and abstract at times, however, it is my hope that listeners will find something in common with these songs.

Thanks to Nathan S, Brady V, Megan T, and Fraser P, for playing these songs with me live.

Some significant albums I drew from to make this record: Bon Iver – For Emma Forever Ago, Andy Shauf – Darker Days, Arcade Fire - Funeral, and The Antlers – Hospice.
